MESOTHELIOMA

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer generally caused by exposure to asbestos. Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or they have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibers in other ways. Washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos, for example, can put a person at risk for developing mesothelioma. This is known as second-hand exposure.

Workers likely to have been exposed to asbestos include:

• steel workers
• construction workers
• pipefitters
• demolition workers
• asbestos insulators
• laborers
• railroad workers
• automobile and heavy machinery mechanics
• people who lived near asbestos factories
• family members through second hand exposure.

Mesothelioma can develop years after exposure without showing any signs. It has an "incubation" period of from 20 to 40 years and even longer. Incubation simply means the amount of time it takes from when you were exposed to asbestos, to the onset of an asbestos-related disease, such as mesothelioma .

Once mesothelioma is diagnosed, often the prognosis is not very good. Treatment for Mesothelioma may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

Symptoms of mesothelioma are different for everyone, but may include the following:

• shortness of breath
• coughing
• pain in chest or abdomen
• fluid in the chest, lungs, or abdomen
• weight loss
• loss of appetite
• inability to sleep
• difficulty swallowing

ASBESTOSIS

Asbestosis is a serious lung disease caused when asbestos fibers are inhaled and become lodged in the inner layers of the lungs. Asbestosis is not a type of cancer, and it is different from mesothelioma.

Asbestosis begins when scar tissue is formed in the lungs (called "fibrosis"). The scar tissue slowly builds up and reduces the lung's ability to deliver oxygen to the blood and remove carbon dioxide. In severe cases of asbestosis, the reduced lung function can strain the heart, or even result in heart disease.

The first symptoms of asbestosis may be shortness of breath and a dry cough.

Presently, there is no treatment that can cure asbestosis. Instead, treatments are put in place to improve a patient's quality of life. There are three main types of treatments for asbestosis, which are surgical treatments, drugs, and alternative treatments.

LUNG CANCER

Asbestos exposure has been linked to lung cancer. Studies show the same process which causes asbestosis can lead to cancer developing in the lungs tissue. Cigarette smoke often causes the effects of asbestos to be multiplied. Many smokers and former smokers who were exposed to asbestos are at increased risk and just because someone smoked does not mean they do not have an asbestos case .

The earliest symptoms of lung cancer can include chronic cough, chest pain, weight loss and persistent tiredness. Many treatment options are available, particularly if diagnosed early.
